Almost six-and-a-half million vapes are still thrown away each week, despite a ban on single-use ones coming into effect last June.
Research by Material Focus has found this is down 23% on this time last year.
However, waste companies are reporting a sharp rise in fires, with incidents in bin lorries and recycling centres up 71% since 2022.
