A new report has revealed Spelthorne Borough Council has wiped more than £300 million from its debt total.

Government-appointed commissioners intervened last year over fears it had reached £1.1 billion.

Their report says total debt has dropped to £715 million but they also noted a “lack of acceptance” of some of the financial steps needed.

Council leader Joanne Sexton says the report “rightly recognises” the steps already taken but “more improvement is required”.
