The local government secretary’s confirmed his decision in the Commons as part of plans to merge district and county authorities, which is also taking place in Surrey next year.
Only last year, the Government confirmed that elections for the new East Surrey and West Surrey unitary councils will still go ahead in May 2026, although the mergers won’t take place until April 2027.
Streatham and Croydon North MP, Steve Reed, has told MPs the ‘vast majority’ of polls are still going ahead.
His Tory counterpart claims the ‘scale and scope of the cancellations is unprecedented’.
