A group of MPs is warning that the state of the prison system is damaging efforts to cut crime and rehabilitate offenders.

The Justice Committee report’s found factors such as overcrowding and staff shortages are undermining aims to reduce reoffending.

The document highlights issues at HMP Wandsworth, which has been at the centre of two mistaken prisoner releases over recent weeks.

Speaking in the commons this week, Justice Secretary David Lammy said he was happy with the progress Wandsworth is making.
