Wandsworth Council has welcomed confirmation that Lavender Hill Police Station’s front counter will remain open, following public concern about the Met Police’s plans to reduce the number of 24-hour front counters across London.

The number of front counters where the public can speak to officers will drop from 37 to 27, and be staffed between 10am and 10pm on weekdays and 9am and 7pm at weekends.

Only Lewisham and Charing Cross will remain open 24 hours.

Graeme Henderson, Cabinet Member for Health, said: “This is good news for Wandsworth. We’ve been clear from the start that our borough must not lose its front counter. Lavender Hill plays a vital role in keeping our community safe and making sure residents can speak to an officer face to face. We’ll continue working closely with the Met to ensure this commitment is kept and that local policing remains visible, accessible, and properly supported.”

Wandsworth Council had previously raised strong objections to any closure of the Lavender Hill counter, warning it would leave the borough without a single full-time public access point to the police.
