He’s taking on the second job now vacant following Angela Rayner’s departure.
Reed has been serving as environment secretary since the general election.
Rayner’s other role, deputy prime minister, has been given to David Lammy, who has become the justice secretary.
He previously held the role of the foreign secretary.
