The guidance directly addresses concerns from coroners and campaigners following recent fatal shootings.
One such case was the death of Epsom College head Emma Pattison and her seven-year-old daughter Lettie.
The pair were discovered at their home in the grounds of Epsom College in February 2023.
A Senior Coroner at the time concluded that they were unlawfully killed after being shot by Emma’s husband George.
He died by suicide after he shot himself with the same gun.
Afterwards, Surrey Police urged anyone who believes they, or a friend or family member, may be experiencing domestic abuse to report it.
Under the new guidelines, police officers will now be mandated to interview partners or other household members of firearms licence applicants.
