Siobhain McDonagh is a strong opponent of plans to close departments at St Helier and move them to Belmont.
Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a hospital was to be built at Belmont under the New Hospital’s Programme.
But it was announced by the new Labour government in July that that programme is to be reviewed.
Ms McDonagh says the thought of her constituents using St George’s or Croydon hospitals is a “terrifying prospect”.
She says they are already too heavily used.
But she says it’s a prospect that is plausible as those sites are more easily reachable from Mitcham and Morden than Belmont.
She’s calling on Wes Streeting to rebuild St Helier on its current, 1930s site instead.
NHS England supported building at Belmont as it is home to the London Cancer Hub which consists of the ICR and Royal Marsden.
A spokesperson for Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust said:
“Building a new hospital will give our sickest patients in Mitcham, Morden and beyond access to the highest quality care in state-of-the-art facilities, but we also plan on upgrading St Helier and Epsom hospitals, where 85% of patients would continue to be treated. Our ageing buildings are not fit for purpose, and we are continuing to progress our plans while the government’s review takes place.”
