Water companies could be hit with £2 billion in fines over the next five years as a penalty for leaking sewage into rivers and lakes.

Ratings agency Moody’s says tougher regulation by Ofwat will result in suppliers being financially disciplined for pollution.

Some firms, including Thames Water, are already struggling with large debts.
