First built in 1514 for Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, the Chapel Royal was subsequently enlarged and embellished for Henry VIII.

But it is Queen Anne’s 18th-century baroque redecoration that the team will get up close to for the first time in over 20 years.

They will erect a 10-metre-high bespoke scaffold to carry out the works.

Visitors will have the opportunity to view the conservation efforts from the Royal Pew during the Palace’s regular opening hours.

Historic Royal Palaces says it has simply not been possible to do this work until now due to the difficulties of closing the Chapel.

It continues to serve as a place of worship as well as being regularly used as the home of the Choral Foundation.
