Arlene Wellman says she was left in cold and dark accommodation when she arrived in the UK back in 1996 from Trinidad.
England’s most senior internationally educated nurse says she had no one to turn to all weekend as accommodation offices were closed.
Her app called ‘Ask Aunty’ pairs newly arrived staff with a colleague who can help them settle into life in the UK.
An ‘Aunt’ or ‘Uncle’ can help with things like finding a house to rent and how to open a bank account.
Arlene says the NHS is “dependent on our international nurses and this app will really help them navigate life in the UK and at work”.
